What are Energy Gels?
Energy gels are a scientifically formulated carbohydrates or carbohydrate and electrolyte blends in a portable packet.
Designed to be consumed before and during training and racing to get extra calories in quickly, energy gels are absorbed fast, giving you fast acting energy to keep running for longer.
Benefits of Energy Gels for Runners
Available in single serves and larger pouches, gels are an easy way to keep track of how much energy you’re putting in and pack into a pocket, belt or running vest with ease.
Unlike bars or chews, most energy gels can be consumed without extra water. Single serves state how much energy is in each packet, making it easy to hit your target numbers without having to do extra maths while you run.
How Often Should I Take An Energy Gel?
Every runner is different but the amount of energy you need to take in will depend on how far and how fast you're running. But generally, runners aim to take in 60-90 grams of carbohydrates an hour during extended efforts, long runs over a couple of hours and races.
We recommend trying a few different gels to find one you like and starting with taking an energy gel every 30–45mins and testing whether that feels like it's replenishing you with enough energy.
What are High Carb Energy Gels?
High carb energy gels are concentrated running fuels designed to deliver larger amounts of fast-absorbing carbohydrates during exercise. Products like Precision Fuel 90 and Maurten 160 deliver higher amounts of energy per gel to support performance in long runs, races, and endurance events.
However, taking in higher amounts of carbs needs to be practised during long runs and built up slowly over time to avoid GI distress. Not every runner needs a high carb fuelling plan or can tolerate it.
