We're here to help you find the best marathon shoe for your race – not just the fastest shoe on our wall.

We believe the best marathon shoe for you is the shoe that you can maintain your goal pace in for the longest. That means looking for the best mix of cushion, comfort and shoe technology for your experience, the way you run and the time you're targeting for race day.

Beginner / First Marathon Shoes

If you're heading out for your first marathon, it's possible you'll be on your feet for a number of hours – maybe 4 hours or longer – so comfort should be a key consideration.

Many modern daily trainers are great options for your first marathon shoes, as they are well-cushioned, comfortable, durable and less expensive than 'race day' specific shoes.

Running your first marathon in a shoe you've done your training in will give you confidence in it's suitability for race day too.

Intermediate Marathon Shoes

Intermediate marathon shoes fall into two main types for race day shoes: plated or un-plated super trainers.

Super trainers make use of premium performance foams in the midsole. This makes them bouncier and more responsive than daily trainers and super trainers with added plates increase propulsion too.

Super trainers can be more stable and forgiving than an all-out super shoe if form does start to fade towards the end of the race. Stiff, carbon-plated super shoes can feel uncomfortable to wear at lower paces, making a super trainer a great option if you're still working towards maintaining and advanced pace.

Super trainers are great for doing speed training and longer fast runs in as part of a shoe rotation due to being more durable than race-specific shoes too.

Advanced Marathon Shoes

Runners looking for a high-level performance should make use of advanced shoe technology available in modern marathon running shoes.

Shoes for advanced marathon runners have high volumes of super-critical foam in the midsole to make them cushioned and offer a high rebound.

Super-critical foams sandwich a carbon fibre plate, and together they make the shoe light, bouncy, responsive and propulsive for the ultimate performance.

The geometry and technology of these shoes is designed to work best at faster paces. Runners who cannot maintain a fast race pace may find the stiffness of the plate and unstable soft foam uncomfortable and ultimately a super shoe may negatively affect their performance if they are reduced to a walk.

Super shoes are less durable than super trainers and daily trainers, so are best reserved for peak training runs and race days.

Runners looking for an elite performance should also be aware that World Athletics state a "legal" maximum midsole height of 40mm at the heel, and some modern shoes are higher than this.
